With 24 years of experience in secondary education, I have dedicated my career to fostering a love of learning and a deep understanding of English language and literature. Currently serving as the Department Head at a public high school in Rhode Island, I bring a wealth of experience in teaching students from grades 8-12, and have a comprehensive understanding of the challenges students face at all levels.
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of teaching a variety of courses, including college prep, honors, SAT prep, and college-level writing as an adjunct professor. My expertise spans reading intervention strategies, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics, writing revisions, and the development of strong writing skills. I have also successfully guided students through the intricacies of research papers, senior projects, capstone papers, and annotated bibliographies.
In addition to my classroom experience, I have led SAT preparation courses, providing targeted instruction to help students achieve their best scores. As a Senior Project Coordinator, I’ve mentored students through extensive research projects, supporting them with the skills needed to produce high-quality work. My teaching philosophy focuses on personalized instruction, helping students identify their unique strengths while building their academic confidence.
If you're looking for a dedicated tutor with extensive teaching experience in both high school and college-level English, I can help you succeed in achieving your academic goals.
Ms. Gray is one of my favorite teachers in high school. I had her for 9th grade English and came to class every day excited to continue with what we had been working on the day before. The switch between middle school English and high school English is not an easy adjustment. Still, Ms. Gray ensured that all her students including myself had a great understanding of the material and had fun learning about English. In particular, she helped me clean up my grammar and become a more sophisticated writer with specific vocab words! If I had the chance to have her teach me again I would take it immediately because she helped me form an appreciation for literature and a strong foundation academically for my high school career. - Charles H.
