This introductory American Sign Language class is a fun and creative way for students in grades K-3 and 4-6 to learn the basics. Each 3 hour session focuses on learning specific signs. For example, our first class introduces deaf culture with game play, and the alphabet to help students gain confidence in fingerspelling and numbers 1-20. Successive classes build on each other, reinforcing what's already been learned and adding signs having to do with colors, animals, food, sports, emotions, occupations, etc. Lessons may involve play with shaving cream, finger paints, modeling clay, and other hands-on materials/manipulatives.

Creative types have a reputation for being complex and conflicted individuals. Some of our most brilliant and famous artists and authors have struggled with addictions and inner demons. Artists have used many different mediums to express their “monsters within” and we have admired the work, questioned the pieces and examined the places they hold in art history, society and our lives. Similarly, many authors have committed their struggles with inner demons to the printed page. Expressing their monsters on paper, canvas or in clay is one way to "tame" them in some way. Exploring specific artists and authors and their works while using art materials and journaling allows students to express themselves in a safe space without fear of judgement. As a bonus: in the past, high school students have cited this offering as an elective worth .5 credits on their college applications. If you would like to learn more about the artists and authors this course highlights, please email us. This program is offered to students entering grades 8-12.

During the week of July 14-18 Julie Czerenda, our resident artist and art educator, will accept individual appointments for art portfolio reviews. This program is open to students in 10th-12 grade who are preparing art portfolios for admissions to selective art schools or programs at specific schools that require an art portfolio. This is not to be confused with open studio time. The day and time of your 1 hour appointment must be selected in advance. Students are required to bring a list of schools to which they are interested in applying and are strongly encouraged to bring portfolio pieces with them as opposed to arriving solely with photos or digital images of their work. Once you register below, you will receive a confirmation email that asks you to select the day and time of your appointment.
