Biography:
I am entering my 20th year in education this year. I hold a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. I am a CREC AARC program graduate with a dual certification/cross-endorsement in Special Education. I am also certified through the Academy of Orton Gillingham as an Associate Level practitioner in this approach to teaching reading. My expertise and experience are primarily in the areas of learning disabilities and mixed dyslexia.
During my early years in education, I was a tutor at Sylvan Learning Center teaching one-on-one and small group lessons in direct literacy, reading comprehension, mathematics, study skills, and more.
The majority of my years in education have been spent in the public school system as a Special Education teacher and case manager where I have taught at all levels, but mostly the elementary (K-6) level. The past three years, I taught at the middle school level with an emphasis on reading and language arts and in-class support and resource room instruction in both ELA and mathematics. Most recently, I have been moved back to the elementary level where I am currently a 4th and 5th grade case manager.
The best part of my work as an educator is to guide my students in finding their optimal learning styles. It brings me great joy to watch them become successful learners and feel confident in their unique abilities.
"During the 2023-2024 school year, Christina Smith held the position of Special Education teacher at Warren School. She taught reading to our students in need, using the Orton Gillingham approach. I witnessed great progress in my student’s ability to read, spell, and write. She worked daily with one of my students who had been struggling for three years and this student became successful in approaching grade level reading, making her very proud of herself. I would highly recommend Christina as an OG teacher." - colleague
"My experience working with Mrs. Smith has been exceptional. I started working with Mrs. Smith in 4th grade, over the next 3 years we created a very special bond. I was reading at a 4rd grade reading level when I started working with Mrs. Smith, and within 1 1/2 years of using Orton-Gillingham, I was able to reach a high school reading level. I loved school and reading but I was always very self conscious and embarrassed about reading out loud. Popcorn reading was my worst nightmare. By the end of my time with Mrs. Smith, I wouldn’t stress so much about reading because of my new-found confidence. To work with Mrs. Smith the school would take me out of random classes during the day. I did not like missing class so to remedy this, Mrs. Smith would come to school 1 hour early to work with me. While learning new things I would get frustrated and overwhelmed; Mrs. Smith would always be there to comfort me and wipe away my tears. When I would get down on myself she would encourage me and tell me to reach for the stars. She taught me all the tools I needed, I just needed to learn when to use them. Today I am a sophomore in college and can say without a doubt that I would not be where I am without Mrs. Smith." - Ava W.
